Generative News

Generative journalism, in general

  1. Generative journalism is about relations not about structures.
  2. Change happens at the speed of relationships
  3. Generative journalism is about customising for the client, this is not necessarily about going to scale.
  4. Generative journalism is acknowledges and recognises what is happening and in this way seeks to get closer to society.
  5. Overall generative journalism seeks to capture the power and passion of people, by highlighting their inspiration and action(s) we seek contribute towards making our living world a better more liveable place.
  6. Stimulating people into a new direction and action? Characterised by no blame, no shame and not open to complaining. Beware of the dominant discourse.
  7. As the interviewer dare to follow and go into the direction that questions and answers lead you.
  8. When planning for a Generative News project look at the media infrastructure available and make a distinction between owned and earned media. To the maximum extent possible use their media channels in use.
  9. When working on different projects take time to rate these projects in terms of values; relationships; respect for authenticity.

The practice of generative journalism

  1. Be prepared with a small number of questions that show your curiosity, attention and focus.
  2. Develop questions using the networked or connected mind in a form of rapid prototyping.
  3. The build up of the interview can often follow an opposite flow or direction of the story building in writing.
  4. Asking in a non-judgemental way people, communities, grass-roots to tell their stories about gifts, strengths and their pride.
  5. GN-practitioners have opted for subjectivity to enable collecting and amplifying the voice of the community.
  6. Do not offer help! Do not offer advice or suggested action; this is not about being non-responsive.
  7. Beware that as a inquirer you do not project into the answer.
  8. Publish the small stories as soon as possible.  Publish all the time…
  9. Stories need to be told over and over again, they are the daily miracles. Collectively they will form pathways of stories that emerge over time. It is only after several (four) months you will experience stories flowing and the ecology of stories begins to firm. Alternatively it takes 8 – 12 interviews before you can see a further or refined theme emerging
  10. Systems narration is about realising and finding the boundaries.
  11. Harvesting real stories from the community provides a ‘warm bed’ of memories that gives life.
  12. The difference between Generative News and most other forms of journalism is that the latter reports on and Generative News collectors engage with.

The dark side of events, memories and stories

  1. Anxiety, the dark sides and the shadow are not taboo subjects, they can suck you in, so be prepared.
  2. A typical question for that situation/setting is: What gift helped you get through that phase/instant/situation?
